Without Guarantee
To fully live is to risk loss, death.
Not abstractly or philosophically, but in the small, often daily ways the heart is asked to open without guarantee.
To love someone is to accept that one day you will grieve them, or they will grieve you.
To create is to risk misunderstanding.
To speak truth is to risk exile.
To soften is to risk being hurt.
There is no way to step into the current of aliveness and remain untouched.
We often imagine safety as the absence of endings, as if we could love lightly, commit halfway, show up with only the parts that cannot be wounded. But that isn’t living. That’s hovering at the edge of the river, analysing the temperature, wanting guarantees that it will be what we want it to be.
But life is a fully immersive experience.
Immersion means vulnerability to change, decay, and death in its many forms. Relationships shifting. Identities falling away. Certainties dissolving. The body ageing. Seasons closing.
Yet what is the alternative?
To guard the heart so tightly that nothing truly enters? To move cautiously enough that nothing ever really matters?
There's a quiet tragedy in that kind of protection. A living death. A narrowing of experience that mistakes numbness for wisdom and vulnerability for weakness, when in reality it is the very ground of a life fully lived.
So paradoxically, the willingness to lose is what actually allows us to love deeply. The acceptance of death is what gives life its vividness. When we stop trying to secure permanence, colour returns. Texture returns. Gratitude returns.
You begin to taste moments more fully when you know they cannot be kept.
The fragility of things is not a flaw in the design. Impermanence is not a threat to life, it makes life luminous. To fully live is to walk with the knowledge that everything changes… and to open anyway.
We open not as an act of will, or as a heroic choice, but because there has never been a position outside of this risk… we are already in it.
Already loving.
Already vulnerable.
Already part of the movement that gives and takes in the same breath.
No decision required.
Just this tender, uncontrollable aliveness… happening.
