Winter's Invitation
From the start of today’s winter retreat…
Winter carries a quieter invitation.
One that asks for the laying down of effort,
of the constant leaning toward achievement and becoming.
A season that gently insists on a different rhythm,
one of descent rather than ascent.
Here, stillness is not something to be reached or cultivated.
It is what remains when doing loosens its hold.
When the impulse to strive softens,
and attention settles into what is already present.
This is not a turning away from life,
but a deepening into it.
A listening beneath movement.
A remembering that some things ripen only in the dark, in the pause,
in the willing surrender to winter’s way.
