Met Without Armour
“Naked, nailed to the tree of life” — Simone Weil
I was sitting with this quote, one my husband Martyn shared with me years ago. A quote that reveals itself, reveals life, the more you sit with it. So this is my invitation to you today...
Sit with it slowly.
Let it move within you,
revealing its wisdom as it goes.
See how it speaks of there being nothing to hold,
nothing to hide behind.
No covering, no explanation, no spiritual clothing.
Naked means exactly this.
The soul without defence.
Without story.
Without even the wish to be saved from what is.
Nailed means there is no movement away.
No flight into insight.
No retreat into transcendence.
Just this exact place where life meets limit.
The tree of life is not elsewhere.
It is not a future fulfilment.
It is not heaven deferred.
It is the very structure of existence as it is now,
bearing weight,
bearing pain,
bearing love.
Here, attention is all that remains.
Pure, unprotected attention.
The kind that does not ask for relief.
The kind that allows grace to descend rather than be sought.
This is not resignation.
It is consent.
Not to suffering itself, but to reality.
To what is given.
In that consent, something unspeakably alive appears.
Not as reward.
Not as meaning.
But as presence.
This is what Simone Weil trusted.
Not escape.
Not elevation.
But truth,
met without armour.
“Live naked, nailed to the tree of life.” — Simone Weil
