Discernment Born of Intimacy
Discernment is of profound need in life.
It’s a quiet, steady seeing.
A clarity that does not rush.
A sensitivity that feels beneath the surface of things.
Discernment is the capacity to recognise what’s aligned and what’s subtly off. To sense the difference between intensity and depth. Or between charisma and integrity, comfort and truth.
Without it, we’re easily pulled.
Pull by strong personalities,
by collective emotion,
by fear,
or by the longing to belong.
We mistake volume for wisdom.
Urgency for importance.
Confidence for clarity.
Discernment slows the movement.
It listens beneath the words.
It notices the body’s response.
The slight contraction.
The soft opening.
The almost imperceptible hesitation that says, look again.
It’s born of intimacy with oneself.
If you do not know the texture of your own alignment, how will you recognise when you have stepped away from it?
It asks for honesty, for humility to admit,
“I wanted that to be true.
I wanted to believe them.
I wanted to fit in.
And so I overrode the quiet voice.”
Discernment is that voice.
It does not shout or demand attention.
It simply remains, steady and available, waiting to be heard.
In spiritual spaces, in relationships, in leadership, in culture at large… discernment is an act of love. It protects what is sacred without closing the heart. It allows openness without naivety.
To live without discernment is to drift.
To live with it is to walk awake.
